14th October 2009

Colwyn Bay has been awarded silver gilt and runner up position in the Coastal section (over 12k population) of the Britain in Bloom competition.

This highly contested national award follows the town’s eighth consecutive win in the Wales in Bloom competition.

Ingrid Lewis Colwyn Bay Town Manager and Chair of Colwyn in Bloom said: ”To be invited to participate in the Britain in Bloom competition is an immense honour that few towns ever realise. The real winner however is the wider Colwyn Bay community who have worked together in partnership to achieve this positive outcome. This hard work and sheer enthusiasm of so many community, social and business groups, individuals and the public sector should be applauded.”

  • Schoolchildren have worked hard throughout the year on various environmental projects
  • Voluntary Groups are continuing their excellent work in improving their communities
  • Gardeners from throughout the area have tended their gardens or where no garden is available have created rooftop gardens and window boxes
  • A record number of businesses have purchased hanging baskets
  • The Bryn Euryn Nursery team has developed the hanging baskets and railing troughs
  • Colwyn Town Council has funded additional willow features, subsidised hanging baskets for businesses and co-ordinated the ‘In Bloom’ campaigns
  • Conwy County Borough Council's Environment Service has worked tirelessly to ensure that all the public spaces/parks and gardens are in top condition and that all public areas are clean and tidy.

The award not only ensures that the area is attractive all year around but provides a welcome boost for Colwyn Bay.
